I can find tons of used boat sites, but I am having a hard time finding a site that lists new boat prices/MSRPs. I would like to use this info as a starting point to see what price range I am dealing with. An example, Hunters home page has a MSRP of 38,590 for a 2003? 270 w/an inboard and wheel steering. On another site I see a 2003 Cataline 270 for 68,759. Being new to sailing, I would like a good reference of different boat models, so I can start learning what features cause such price differences. Also, can anyone give me other manufactures that are comparable to Hunter & Catalina 23-28, trailerable if possible. Thanks, Tim

Many dealers and manufacturers don't like posting new boat prices in national/international publications. If you check the back of CW or Sail, you'll see that most of the new boats are "Call now." I suspect your best bet is the manufacturer's web site or searching for dealers to see if they have prices listed on their own sites.

Try Yachtworld
It's not perfect, but try yachtworld (see link). If you select "New" and "All Sail" from the search criteria and enter in your length range you'll get some responses. The catch: many won't have prices, as mentioned earlier, AND those that do are often "base" prices with actual sail-away prices being considerably higher. Accepting those caveats, it's the best way I've found to get an understanding of RELATIVE prices of new boats. As I said, it's far from perfect, if anyone has a better solution, I'd like to hear about it too!

It's difficult to compare new boat prices because of all the options, different freight prices, etc. Some dealers will advertise base boats while others sell "sailaway equipped" boats... and people have different ideas what sailaway means. So the only real way to get a handle on things is to call dealers in your area, or better yet, hit a boat show where it's easier to compare different models. Best of luck, Trevor

Just for instance I have seen many sailboats where Sails, ANY electronics, heads, canvas, windlass, ovens, Large batteries, etc, etc are Extras that you have to pay for. That can REALLY add up. The Catalina you listed would have all of those things standard -- so you can't tell the "relative" price The only way to know is price out the boat the way you really are going to get it. That will give you the only good idea of what it will cost. Some of those "low ball" prices are actually a bait and switch just to get you in.

Boat Show Please
Dealers and manufactures put more than a little cash into boat shows to help educate the consumer about product, quality, and price. Take time off and attend a show where all this information is available. Also, limit yourself to the larger shows if sail is the primary interest. Have fun and enjoy kicking tires. Sailkota
