A joint statement released from both the VA and MD DEP/fisheries have last week announced that the crab harvest predictions are WAAAAAAY up, suggesting crab harvests equal to the early 1990s !!!!! All due to the total ban for the past few years of winter 'scraping' of female crabs out of the mud.

Good news!!!!! ... as I was getting tired of all the Gulf of Mx imported crabs that tasted like a BP oil pump, and was actually longing for crabs that taste like the infamous Baltimore Back Creek Sewer Plant. :-D

Now if we could get a five year moratorium on menhaden and oyster harvest the bay would be crystal clear and beautiful again.

I heard that at one time the hugh number of oysters in the Bay could filter all the water every three days.
It is pretty amazing that She even survives with out the tank filter.

I also believe that before the meat hunters killed off the water fowl there were more waterfowl on the bay than there are chickens on the farms but the oysters and other filter feeders kept the water clean.

Good news for the crab harvest. There is, however, some disturbing news concerning the invasive species in the Potomac River.

The Northern Snakehead fish has been established in the Potomac River for a few years now. I read a report the other day that a dead Snakehead fish was discovered last year in Smith Creek, MD. Originally it was thought that the Snakehead could not tolerate the salt water but it can tolerate it a bit better than they thought. There are fears that it may spread to the Northern Bay and Rivers in the area.

I caught my first snakehead the other week while flyfishing in the Occoquan River.

The good news about the northern snakehead is that they are very good eating.

Somebody will have to market the snakehead under a different name if they want people to eat it at restaurants.

That could be a good thing!! Market it as an exotic fish and charge some crazy price for it. "I'll take the baked snakehead with Beluga caviar and a bottle of 1907 Heidsieck."

Already doing that with the invasive poisonous Lion Fish that is decimating caribbean reefs --- not enough recipes, too many lion fish.

Is the lionfish poisonous or venomous? That is, does it make you sick when you bite it or when it bites you?

Spines inject a venom. Once the spines are carefully removed (pliers) its supposedly safe to eat and reportedly tasty.

The almost fully decimated fishery at the Island Eleuthra is now commercially fishing for them ... the only thing left of the reefs.

Theyve spread from probably the aquarium tanks at the Atlantis Casino in Nassau to as far as Brazil and Massachusetts in a very few years, so youll probably be able to catch them at your dock during high salinity episodes of the Northern Bay in a year or so.

Scott, you are so right! The snakehead is Ca Loc (Vietnamese). Now everyone get busy cookin' some Ca Loc ! nhanh chóng!

It should pair nicely with an Australian Chardonnay!

Have I mentioned how succulent these resident Canadian Geese are? Slow roasted, fall-off-the-bone, tender-as-your-eyeball good eatin'
