Good idea?

I have a 23 foot oday. I raised the point of attachment of the jib to deck by 12" so I could see in front of me easier. In theory how would this effect performance? I have not noticed any difference, but then probably not that experienced.Also the leech seems to flutter quite a bit. What is the reason for this and how important is it that I would need to correct it?I enjoy reading this site and feel sure some one will answer this. thanks a lotChuck

on how you "raised" it 12 inches.Chances are that you also changed the angle of the forestay, which in turn changed the shape of the jib. the sails on a boat ate like the wing of an airplane. The fact that you are luffing so much tells me that the shape is such that the air is not flowing over the sail efficiently anymore.You might be able to get away with it, but you will probably have to have the jib re-cut, or buy a new sail made to the new dimensions of your rigging.Griffin.

I'm not sure what griffin is referring to re: changing the forestay angle. Did you raise the height by using a pennant?Raising the foresail by using a pennant will raise the clew also. If your jib lead block is fixed, the leach will be under more tension compared to the foot than before you raised the jib, and so should "luff" less. If you think the leech is loose now, just lower the tack back down to the deck and see how much flutter you have.Where is the jib lead block located? Foredeck just aft of the shrouds, or turning block back by the cockpit?The sail could have lost it's shape, or you might need more tension on the forestay.Re-cutting could be the answer, but only after the state of the rigging has been considered.
