Catalina 250 New York, NY
I'm heading from New York down to the Keys in October on my Catalina 27 and would like to haul her out somewhere on the way and paint the bottom myself. Can anyone recommend a good boat yard along the way that: 1. Will let me sand and paint myself 2. Is near a marine store (West Marine, BoatUS, etc.) for emergencies 3. Has reasonable prices I'll be heading down the NJ Coast, through the C

Haul out at Gratitude, near Rock Hall

Sounds like a fun trip! My boat hails from Rock Hall, MD. It' midway down the eastern shore, due east of Baltimore and just before the bay bridge and Annapolis. As a newcomer to that area last year, I was delighted to find a yard that I could trust, that had good pricing, and qaulified help. Gratitude Marina is just that. There is a West Marine right down the road, some of the best crabs & seafood on the bay nearby, and a gorgeous marina, Inn and restaurant called Osprey Point. I keep my boat there and love it! There is also a great, safe anchorage just around the point of Gratitude in "The Haven", which is across from Osprey Point marina. Ask for Doug Megargee or Jon Wright at Gratitude Marina, 1-800-622-7011. They are currently running a haul and wash special at $6.00 a foot. Have a great trip! Tell'em Steve from "Grace" sent you! (they might charge you more if you do!!)

yard

After you leave the C&D and enter the Chesapeake, go about 6 miles up the Sassafras River to Georgetown Yacht Basin. Good responsive yard, well stocked store. The Sassafras is to port going south, just south of Grove Neck.

Also try

Gregg Neck Boat Yard, which is just a little further up the Sassafras from Georgetown, on the other side of the Route 213 bridge. Reputedly a great old fashion boat yard. Many of the larger yards are signing up for the "Green Initiative", which means that you will need dust and falling residue collection and containment to keep the environment safe from bottom paint contamination, not to mention your lungs. Down near Baltimore, give White Rocks Marina consideration. It's on Rock Creek, on the south side of the Patapsco. Further down Bay is Maryland Marina, another sailing-oriented DIY yard.

#1do it yourself on the bay ....

usually rated #1 for do it yourself - Casa Rio in Mayo, MD. About 1 mi off the bay in off the West River, about 5 mi S of Annapolis. Not the prettiest place but the price has been right, West is just up the road (5 miles) and of course any thing you want is in Annapolis...a few miles away. New ownership this year (by long term employee) so I'm not sure about the current rates. Herington Harbor North (there's also a South, but you want North) is basically right on the bay a few miles further south. Huge yard, there's a West right on site. Limited offsite amenities (groceries, etc.) but rides out are probaly easy to come by. IMHO, best setup would be Bert Jabins or Port Annnapolis in Annapolis itself (section called Eastport.) I think they allow do it yourself. Easy walking/dingy to anything you could ever want. Not sure about their rates, but you can't beat the location. But beware, you'll be running into the boat shows and winter haul-out season (late Oct on) so their flexiblity may be limited. Or, if you want further I can give you couple of good suggestions in NC. Just ask.

A little further south

A little further down the bay at the mouth of the Rappahannock, Deltaville Yachting Center. A small but very nice and well equipped marina pool, clubhouse etc. Full service yard, great for DIY, also the area Catalina dealer. Both Boat US and West Marine in Deltaville. Deltaville is small, out of the way and very sailor friendly. Enjoy your cruise and if you stop at DYC lookup Skip and Karin on Obsession.

I vote for Cutty Sark in Norfolk

I vote for Cutty Sark in Little Creek, Norfolk. They were super for us: let us do our own work, some supplies on premise, close to great brass & glass dining, plus some of the best home cooking at the grill right there at Cutty Sark. Bay Marine is next door, just as good, plus very well respected crew. Joe

DIY Yard

I'm at Herrington Harbour North and, as noted by Don above, it's a full service yard that will let you do just about anything you need to do. It's located right off the Bay about 20 miles south of Annapolis and the Bay Bridge and has a WM on site. Easy to find and lots of transient slips. Let me know if you want or need more info and/or contact names and numbers (imcrewzen@hotmail.com)

Sounds like a great trip! Cutty Sark is a good yard...can't say a thing a thing bad about them. Jimmy is good people. Not sure how long they are going to be around though...condo people have made them an offer I think they couldn't refuse. Further down the Elizabeth is Va Boat and Yacht-Bill Hughes is the manager there. Small yard but good people. There is Portsmouth Boating Center...a little bigger than Va Boat- still on the Elizabeth. One yard that you should stay away from is Chesapeake Yachts. Further down the Elizabeth on the ICW. Had an absolutely horrible experience there...put it this way a 5K bottom job for 1 month turned into 8.5K and 4 months. And he didn't even tell me about the extra costs and then wanted a certified check before he splashed me.
