Survey

Best to get a survey and spend a little up front. The surveyor should be able to provide a market value and identify any areas that might need attention (read: $$).

NADA online has boat values. (i personally tend to think they are a little optimistic tho.)

What do you want to do with it? If as little as possible, it isn't a deal. If you want to refurbish a nicely designed and sailing boat, figure to put in the same into sails, canvas, standing and running rigging and interior. That's with careful shopping and a lot of DIY. But, you'll have a nicely freshened boat, probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-12K. Good luck.

Value

Check NADA, as mentioned above, IMHO, they are not too bad on lower valued boats, but the more the boat is worth, the lower the NADA value. The pros use the fee section of www.bucnet.com. Also, get a survey...a good surveyor will give you a good idea of its true value.

Are you nuts?

I've seen Cal 29's for less, but thats a terrific boat for the money. A classic plastic coastal cruiser, the cockpit is unfashionably large and the companionway is a climb, but still... its called various things like the baby Cal40 and also the largest 29 footer made. Try to find a surveyor that knows something about Cals. Check the transverse 'dreaded beam' in the bilge under the compression post. Check the bulkheads and chainplates for tabbing, rot and corrosion. Check the wooden spreaders for rot. Check the deck and cabintop for water intrusion and softness; its not a cored deck but a wood reinforced deck. Check to see if its a steel fuel tank. Obviously check for blisters and keel damage (lead inside fiberglass shell - no bolts). Check for rudder problems and all the other usual stuff. At that age it may need some work. And email me (Macgregor file) for more info on support groups, its a very documented and popular boat.
