I'm going to look at a 1985 hunter 34 is there anything I should look for? (If it passes my and my wife’s inspection I will have it served)

By all means, have the boat surveyed before you make a financial commitment. The H34's have a few problems, not unlike any other boat of the same age. The most common one on later boats such as the one you're looking at is the area around the mast step/compression post. Look for cracking on the inside around the teak column/overhead at the head door and any depression in the deck on the outside.

Fixed ports tend to develop leaks at that age. The gaskets on the opening ports probably will need replacing. Their window material may have become crazed as well, making a full port replacement desireable. The keel is steel and will need special attention at each haulout to knock down rust spots, seal and prime them before bottom painting.

The B&R rig is not tuned the way "conventional" rigs are so read up on them before attempting any tuning adjustments. The boat is tender over 15 knots of wind--reef early, but enjoy the ride!

At that age, many of the systems should be looked at carefully--original ones may be due for replacement. For further details, watch this thread and check the archieves. Check out Fred Ficarra's full make over and other improvements others have made.
