I don't want to spend another hurricane season in Florida. Does anyone have information about anchorages in Aruba. As to what is available and whom to contact? Thank you Howard

Watch the currents

Not too familiar with the anchorages, but watch the currents on south side of the island. You can anchor on the east side of the island, but it is not a place you can leave your boat for long periods.

ABC's-Aruba

We spent last huricane season in Bonaire. Neither Aruba or Bonaire have very good huricane holes(but we like Bonaire better, awesome scenery and great diving). Curacao has Spanish Waters which is a very good hole (we went there for Ivan). Many also went down to Venezuela when huricanes came through the area, ie Ivan. It is a night sail from Bonaire and a long day from Aruba. We went and met my parents in Aruba. It is not cruiser freindly. There are minimal services for cruisers and few protected anchorages. The marina is expesive though it is in the middle of downtown. The area is very expensive due to high levels of US tourists. There are very few protected anchorages. We anchored near Orajnsted by the airport for a couple days, it was noisy but close to town. We also anchored off the west end of the island. Great holding only protection is east from the hotels. But it is very, very, very busy with skiers, tubers, para sailor, charter dive, charter cruises, jetskis, crowded and dangerous, but very pretty after the tourists boats leave. Clearing in you are required to tie up at the commerical dock beofre anchoring or going to a marina. The docks are made for cruise ships and large cargo ships ( we were behind the British Navies 'Wave Runner'). You are also required to visit the dock again when clearing out. IMO if you are in the area it is a neat place for a week or two, but not worth it if you are going out of the way to get there! If you are interested in more info on the ABC's let me know, I will be happy to help you out. The cruising guide was last updated in 1998 and does not refelct the indepence of Aruba. We loved the ABC's that we are going back for huricane season again this year! http://members.cox.net/sv_makai/
