I have a 1995 Hunter 29.5 and I can't get much better than 5.5 knots on a good day. What do I have to do to go faster?

did you calculate the hull speed of your boat, maybe she doesn't go faster than that. You will neeed you LWL measurement though.. You may be at hull speed !!!!

I have a 79 Hunter 30. I was getting about 5.5 max. Had a diver clean the bottom and the prop. At 2200 rpm speed went from 4.5 to 5.6. Got 6kts under power easily. Got 6.6 SOG close hauled in about 13kts of wind. Had a little current helping, but she was flying! TO keep things clean get a wide hard bristle broom and an extendable painter's handle (6' - 12'). Put a bend in the extended part about 12" from the end (best to use a tubing bender) so you can "sweep" the hull, keel & rudder once a month or so. This is all for salt water of course.

You do not indicate wether under power or under sail. If you cannot get at least 6.2 knots under sail you need to clean the bottom and/or drop some weight.

The theoretical hull speed of a Hunter 29.5 is 6.75kts. On a reach that can be exceeded with no problem.

As to your boats lack of speed there are a great number of possibilities. Not the least of which is the hull and foils. They need to be clean and faired for optimal performance. Likewise, the sails need to be in good condition and be properly trimmed.

I highly recommend you buy Don Guillette's 'Sail Trim' on this site. It is the best $19.95 you will spend for your boat. He also hosts an Expert forum here, "Sail Trim"
