Glow plugs $$$$$$

Having cold start issues on Westerbeke 10-Two. I know a lot of folks are currently dealing with snow and ice, but here in GA it’s in the high 60s, low 70s and shouldn’t have any issues.

Glow plugs direct from Westerbeke are $78 a piece. Is there an alternative glow plug i can use?Part # is Glow Plug 12vdc 303204

Plugs for my old truck was $80 for 8 plugs.

I found when I rebuilt my 5411 that I could use Kubota plugs, much cheaper than Universal. I believe your Westie is either Kubota or Mitsubishi and you can get plugs for $6 to $10 from them. Likely from any tractor or diesel dealer as well.

Westerbeke is I believe, a Perkins.
Before spending money, do a compression check.

I think you are correct @capta. At least I have heard that from other boat owners. A Perkins that is red not blue.

But I really thought that Westerbeke (I have one of their gensets) were either Kubota or Mitsubishi.

Westerbeke pricing is horrible, but so are most other manufacturers.

I think i’ll pull the plugs and take them to a tractor supply and see if they can match them with something more reasonably priced. As long as they fit and have the same volts, it should work, correct?

Should do! Glow plugs are what made me think Kubota or Mitsubishi. Not many Perkins have glow plugs.

Make sure you check the wire connections. My first boat had a westerbeke.... engine was a hard start for the p/o. I went over the wiring and found a loose connection. Worked like a charm after I fixed.But agree.... if bad pull and take to a tractor supply store and march them up.....

The original Westerbekes were Perkins. When Perkins saw how well Westerbekes were selling as marine engines they took back the distribution rights from Westerbeke and sold their own sailboat engines. Westerbeke then moved on to Mitsubishi and Kubota.

I believe my Westerbeke 42B4 is a Mitsubishi. Sounds like they use them all.

TAD, Trans Atlantic Diesel has been my go to supplier for Perkins parts for many years.They are in VA.

Remove one, scrape off the red paint, and look for the part number. Easy to cross reference. A 10 Two is a Mitsibushi block. Look near the injection pump and you should see KSA2 or similar cast into the block.

Don’t think of that as money saved, rather as more boat parts!
