Is it unusual to always have to make use of the glow plugs to start the Universal M25XP engine. I always thought they were to be used when it was cold, to give the engine a little "help". Even when it is over 70 degrees in the cabin I find I must turn the key to the glow plug position every time I start the engine. Could the batteries be bad? Could something else be going on, or is this normal for this particular engine.

Glo Plugs

I have a Mk II 28 with a universal 23 hp engine. I was told by a Catlina owner always use the glo plugs to start engine. I count to 15 with glo plug pushed in then turn engine key. If the engine has been running and is still warm I do same but count to 10 then turn key. However our weather does not get really cold it might need more in colder climes

It is the design of the engine to use the glow plugs. Once the engine is warm, you can start it for several hours without using the glow plugs.

M25XP Starting

I have a C-30 with an M25XP with only 152 hours on it (I got it with less than 70 hrs). I use the glow plugs for about 20 seconds before each start, and she never fails to start. The diesel needs a good strong battery to spin her over fast enough to get good fuel and compression and although I have had no trouble I added a "starting aid"; an extra solenoid and some cables. I have posted the modification on the IC30A site: ftp.sailnet.com/c30/Faith, under "Ignition".
