My 2005 Hunter 306 is new to me this year. It is equipped with an 18hp Yanmar. How long should the key be put to the "glow plug" setting before starting. I've been holding it on for four to five seconds and it's been starting fine every time. I'm curious what the proper amount of time the glow plugs should be on before starting?

Thanks
Colin

Don is right, marine Yanmar (not their small tractor) engines don't use glow plugs.

Not true for the 3YM series, which have been a around since 2004 and are designed as a marine-only engine. They most definitely have glow plugs. Length of time to activate them depends on ambient temp, but I've found 10-15 seconds adequate on even cool days.

Thanks. It is the original engine and definitely has glow plugs. The 10 to 15 seconds sounds right.

Hi Colin, as the past owner of your 306...you are correct! Depending on temp, I typically ranged 8-12 seconds. Always nice that she started every single time too!
