Gin Pole?

Has anyone ever made their own Gin Pole for raising/lowering the mast? If so can you give me some ideas for constructing my own. I will be using this to raise/lower the mast on a Hunter 25.5 for trailering. Thanks, Dan

Not me, but...

One of my boat's previous owners did. It was two galvanized pipes, one inside the other, with galvanized eye bolts on opposite sides at one end, offset 2" along the length. The larger pipe was 1 1/2" diameter; the whole thing weighed about 60 lbs and I was glad to pay Hunter $56 to make me a proper one. It's aluminium, 1" diameter, and weighs about 2 lbs. It has a 6" stainless cable with crimped and thimbled loops at both ends running through a hole at one end of the pipe. The hole has a nylon bushing to protect the cable from chafe. The opposite end of the pipe has a scalloped cut to fit around the groove channel in the mast. (If you make one, make sure the scalloped cut is aligned with the hole for the cable.) It seemed a little undersized when I first got it, and it bends slightly under tension, but I've used it several times with no problems. Other than the eye splices in the cable loops, it would be straightforward to make one with off-the-shelf tools and supplies. Hunter doesn't stock them, but they made mine to order in less than a week. Hope this helps.

I buuilt one for a

Starwind 22.3 that I had b4 my H26. I bought a length of square tubing at Menards (like a Home Depot) that had holes pre drilled every inch or so. That made it easy to install eye hooks and bolt them on. It worked great. Remember that your gin pole is supposed to be the distance from the base of yur mast to the front of the bow. Good luck Tom s/v Chrisanna II

Hole in mast

On the 26, there is a 1 1/4" diameter hole not quite a foot above the base on the forward edge of the mast. The area where the hole is drilled is reinforced with an aluminium plate welded onto the mast. The gin pole goes into this hole and bears on the aft side, directly on the groove channel (from the inside). That's why the base of the gin pole has a scalloped cut, to fit around the channel. There are probably other ways to do it, but this way seems pretty secure.

Gin Pole for H23

I made a gin pole to help me raise the mast of my H23. I used a 6 ft length of rectangular steel tubing. I attached it to the mast base using the two holes at the bow end of the base plate. I use the jib halyard to adjust the angle of the gin pole to be about 90 deg. to the mast.
