My husband and I will be buying a Catalina 400 in the near future and will become liveaboards upon retiring in May. Thus, we are in the process of downsizing. With the holidays (and an anniversary) approaching, I'd like to get him something that he'll find useful once we are living the dream. We have lots of books on sailing and more clothes than we'll be needing, so I am hoping some of you may have ideas. Is there a tool or item that you find indispensible--or at least very handy to have? I'd really appreciate your collective input! Thanks, Marianne

The ideal gift

Judging from the tales from the Captain and his mate on the boat I chartered last spring, the best gift would be a gift certificate for a hotel room with a king sized bed.

Well, I love my XM radio on the boat, and if you

don't already have inflatable PFD's with harness you probably will at some point.

This year's hot item ...

Davis just came out with a new key float: "Key Buoy™ The ultimate key fob for boaters! ... Strong enough for items weighing up to 4.2 ounces (120 grams) such as keys, small tools, deck plate keys. Suitable for single use only, so keep a spare on hand!" ------------------- These things have an inflatable tube like a mini pfd for your keys. Very cool. Most key floats either won't support very many keys or are very bulky, this seems to solve the problem. The only knock is that they are a one time shot, not reload-able. But getting you keys back from the deep is probably worth a few dollars ... :)

Two Possibilities

I would recommend two items. An MP3 player and a transmitter if you do not already have one. I use my I-River player in conjuction with the small FM transmitter and have all of my CD's loaded on it. We can have hours of music without the bother of having to carry the CD's Oh... and a DVD of Captain Ron is a must..

A Brass Ships Clock (chime of course)

Marianne. For my money nothing is more beautiful and a delight to listen to then a brass ships striking clock. We have had our Boston shipstrike for years on several boats and not only does it look great on a bulhead, the striking feature (chimes) really adds to the atmosphere. And it even gives you the time! Seach the internet as prices bounce around.....Chelsea, Boston are great names. Bob Catalina 30 Breezin II

Thanks!

Great ideas! Thanks so much. I plan to share them with our 6 adult children, too; they are always looking for suggestions.
