Well, fall is almost here, the temps have dropped significantly around here, will probably be my last overnight of the year at anchor, it was a good season, learned a lot about my new to me boat, already excited for next year, thank you everyone for all the help you gave me, I will stick around this winter

Awesome fall in Quebec.

Unfortunately the prairies just seem to switch from Summer to winter almost instantly.

Does anyone stay on their boat year round there ? A business acquaintance had a power boat he lived on year round, in Lake Ontario. Had bubbler systems around the Hull and shore power heaters. :yikes:

Fall is coming fast ;-(

I got my winter storage contract today (sob, sob).

Went out for a sail after work on Wednesday. Was sailing back in the dark before 7:00.

Season is almost to an end

Bummer

Funny, camping-on-the-boat season is just starting down here in Texas. We have plans to go up to Lake Texoma in a few weeks.

What is a winter storage contract ? Sounds like a death sentence :wahwah:.

Deceptive with the big waves as seen on you vid. and yet it looks fairly smooth within the boat. That, or your camera is bolted to the deck. I would imagine there is a difference between the hull impact of a freshwater wave as opposed to a saltwater wave ? Those waves at that speed would be one rough ride out here on the Pacific salt pond.

And you always come back cleaner than I could get my boat after hours of scrubbing.

Nice vid. as always.

Nice video. Looks like the ride was fun.
Do you always sail with the Companion way and door open?

Fall should be the nicest season for sailing here but we're running low on water. We're a watershed reservoir and we've had below normal rainfall. I hauled Bella out before access to the crane becomes difficult. On to the off-season projects!

Hopefully next year is better for rain for you.

Last fall the water here was so low, after a record drought , that some boats ran aground at haul out. Some wells near the marina were dry and some fields had dead crops. We then had record amounts of snow and a very wet spring. Road to the marina washed out. Flooding etc. Lots of water at the docks this fall. Strange weather, but fall has been good this year.

The waves were big, but as you know, hard to capture the depth and height on film. “10-footers“ was a bit of click bait, but the weather service was calling for 8-footers, occasionally 10 feet.

It was really odd to see the Laker boats anchored out.

It was a fun sail.

I close it if it is raining, or if I am worried about swamping then boat (would have to be pretty gnarly wind and waves). I did slid the hatch closed at one point, but opened it to go below for something and left it open.

The waves were spaced apart more than usual it seemed for Lake Michigan, made the sail a bit easier.

Must not be that bad of a sea state. It looks like he is negotiating the waves smoothly.

And his port side lifeline down.
I have to have that lifeline down when I dock. If I forget, some bad stuff will happen to my stancion. If it is REALLY rough out, I will put them in place, or if I have guests.

When I am by myself, I usually don’t worry about them.

Agree Greg. It appears he was some distance from docking, still under sail and in some not so pleasant sea state. I keep mine up regardless of sea conditions and wait to drop until entering the marina. Sailing solo most of the time one never knows when something throws you off balance such as stubbing your toe on a car and the only thing keeping you aboard is a secured lifeline. Just say'n.

Yeah, probably should. Good advice.

Thanks,

It is said about cars, most accidents happen within 3 miles of home.

When out afar we are on alert. Near home we let our guard down.

Cruising in calm waters I have my companion way open and move easily about the boat. If waves come up, the boat is secure, JackLines are set, and tethers are my link to the boat. When away from shore, solo sailing, I don a dry suit. I have no delusions. If I go over the lifeline it is just a matter of time, unless I can get back on the boat. The dry suit, tether and PFD are all about buying time to figure out a solution or give help a chance to find me.

Which is why I decided to move to another city! (Sorry, old Aggie joke)

I have the luxury of sailing a small lake, so don't sail with the spectre of going overboard as much as I would in open waters like Tally Ho does. Still, I often remind myself that being in the water while my boat sails away is NOT an experience I wish to have, and try not to be too cavalier about my relative safety.

Summer clocked out right at the end of it’s shift here with a 25°F temperature drop on 9/22. It was a great season. Despite losing a full month to Covid in June/July I managed to get out sailing 40 days this season and might get one or two more in if the weather cooperases next weekend, so I can’t complain. Haul out is October 12th. Antifreeze, oil & filters are already on the boat for winterizing.
