Georgetown, SC is reported to be a favorite of ICW cruisers, both by the guide and people I have met along the way. I have yet to get ashore to check out the town but I can already see that tolerance of the liveaboard and cruising lifestyle is one of its charms.

I once referred to Rockport, Maine as a harbor full of boats to die for. Words sort of fail me here so this is a collection of photos looking for a caption.

The lifeline nettings of this boat are made from that rough cut, pressure treated, lattice stuff you get at lumber stores. There are large piles of it on deck awaiting completion of this safety modification.

Rodger....there is a great hardware store (Schoffelds) in Georgetown on the way to Paulies Island....they have a lot of marine supplies....you are now in a very nice place to be at rest on your trip south ...i think the Merry Prankster stayed there for a week or two and commented about the slip rates being so low he was not telling in fear of a price increase......enjoy your stay.....also if you have the time take in the little shops while there they are with in walking distance from you .....the history of that port is it was a rice producing and shipping port at one time in the past ....once again enjoy your stay ...

What an interesting assortment of boats :) I especially like the 'jolly green giant' - can't imagine what it would be like in a real blow.......

I actually recognize those boats from our stop there in 2009. Wish I could remember the little breakfast cafe. We tied up for fuel at a small place still rebuilding from a hurricane. Nice old salt. He took our lines, moved the boat a little, said have a nice morning and told us where to get the best grits. Sure do miss cruising.

The boat in the fifth pic I have seen there for maybe a decade and there are boats at the dock that look like they never go out. If you can figure out a way to head up toward Pawleys you can hit Hog Heaven for the best BBQ in the region.

Glad you like our state, Roger. Just wish the Christmas Rush would allow me to come meet you and enjoy some shrimp and grits with you.

Your photographs are great! Sometimes pictures truly are worth a thousand words and need no captions.

p.s. Our boat came from Georgetown. Had a heckuva time sailing her the first time in Winyah Bay. But dang she's great on Wateree Lake!

Slip prices in Georgetown are not cheap. Marinas charge 10.00 a ft. I have used a private slip on the river walk in front of Portofino,s restaurant for 8.00 a ft last year. The Sampit river has been used as mooring for derelict boats for a while now. It,s free. There is no Harbour master and Hazzards Marine is the defacto policeman. People will drop an engine block with a chain and moor to that. The city council wants to clean up the area and requested the authorities (coast guard) for an aproved mooring field. That was over 5 years ago. Still waiting. This summer, Horry and Georgetown counties have started disposing of derelict boats on the Waccamaw and floating fishing cabins on the PeeDee. They did manage to make a dent.
Now the best deal going on for slips are Mariners Pointe in Myrtle Beach. Many absentee owners are renting 35ft slips for 200 a month just to keep the bank from repo them. This is a full service marina with all amenities. (pool, restaurant, club, showers, laundry and fuel) You can find slips for sale on Craigs List for 15k for 30ft and 25k for 50ft with owner financing!! They were selling for 45k to 75k just 4 years ago!

By the way, Le Marquis de Lafayette landed in Georgetown on his way to offer his services to the US Congress.

Ah, Georgetown, SC. The thing I remember best is that the dock had all of these "please don't feed the alligators" signs. Of course, some guy behind one of those restaruants that front the docks was cleaning fish, and said to my kids "watch this", and threw some fish parts into the water to an alligator who was clearly just hanging out waiting for just such an occurance. This 'gator had a name (which I don't remember) and was clearly a favorite. Even without the gators, a charming town.

Closed a couple of years ago. I'm glad I asked at a marina before walking all the way out there.
