What are the available options for sound-proofing the Genset on a 1996 Passage 42 (8KW Kohler)? Can an insulation blanket be used without adversely compromising the cooling of the unit?

what type of genset?

It will depend on tje genset. I did a lot of investigation recently on this issue. If it is the Hunter installed northern lights genset installed above the enginge you may be able to get the enclosure for it. That genset must have adequate ventilation or output and longevity will be adversely affected. Even with the enclosure it will still be fairly noisy due to the fact that it must have air flow that can only be acoomplished through holes in the enclosure. I recently heard an entec genset installed in an enclosure and it was infinitely quiter than an unshielded northern lights. I'm assuming the same results could be achieved with the NL genset enclosure. I opted for the fischer panda for this and some other reasons. I do think you should be able to vastly improve your noise output though. Scott

Type of Genset

Dear Scott I have a Kohler 8KW genset. The Genset sound box sold by Kohler is a clam-shell style of enclosure and is not suitable for the Passage 42 because the Genset is inaccessible from the rear - two 8D batteries are place aft in the engine compartment. I am aware of one owner using a custom made blanket to suppress the sound. An effective sound trap is constructed to prevent straight line emission - much in the same way as a light trap for a photographic darkroom. Some recording studios use effective sound deadening materials to prevent reverb/echo effects. These materials can be effective, however, may not be able to resist engine compartment temps. If you have any further thoughts on the subject or know of a P-42 owner with an effective fix, please advise - John Faro, Key Biscayne Fl.
