genoa track size?

Hi , I'd like to say that having joined this forum only a month ago it has already been very valuable. Thanks all. I have an opportunity to buy a midship cleat to go on the genoa track but my boat is three hours away and I want to be sure the cleat will fit. Does anyone know whether Vega genoa track is a standard size and if so what size it is?

Thanks
Carl

Hi Carl, My boat came with bronze track that I guessed at around 3/4 inch. 20 mm would be the metric equivalent. It suffered a catastrophic failure when a gust caught the sail and it lifted the track off of the rail deck. I replaced it with 1" aluminum track. The bronze fasteners were at about 3 1/2 inches and the industry standard in the USA is 4 inches. I had to plug the old holes and re-drill for the new track. It was not a difficult project. It's kind of hard to say what your track size is because it may have been changed by a prior owner. Venturing a guess if it's bronze it would probably be 20 mm. Any chance you can get a deal to return the cleat if it doesn't fit? I have genoa track cleats and love them.

Walt, My tracks are bronze and I'm pretty sure they're the original 3/4" / 20mm ones. The cleat is for 1" track, so I guess it's going to someone else and I'll have to wait for a deal on cleats which will fit. I'll look at the hardware holding my tracks down next time I'm there!

One comment, since the subject came up; when doing some 120v wiring on my
series 1 I had occasion to disturb the original track fasteners. Three of
them came out broken and the stubs were spongy material possibly brass
instead of bronze. Anyway, I've ordered (40!) stainless replacements and
will refasten the track. The originals were 5" x 10/24. I do remember
someone on the list mentioning the track pulling up when sailing hard.
and, the old ones didn't leak...aaaguh!

Carl, Another thing you might want to check is your mast. Early masts had a riveted track, later masts had an extruded track. If you have a riveted track check the rivets. They do corrode and go away. WaltP.S. Where is your boat?

Walt, My boat is presently in Kingston, Ontario about fifty metres from a bay off Lake Ontario. I think it has always been in fresh water and I hope that has helped stem corrosion. The mast has an extruded track. Since I bought the boat only last year and haven't yet sailed it, there are still many things I need to check over. Thanks for the hints.
