Have the new CDI! New genoa coming soon! ... Even though it's going to be a couple of months before sailing season comes for me. lots to do yet! install tracks, new halyards. new motor mount, bottom paint, and more stuff inside the cabin. If anyone would like to share the ways of roller furling and genoa use I'd really appreciate it. Something already comes to mind for me. can the CDI handle the genoa when it's only partialy unfurled? (reefed, I guess would be the term?) thanks as always! Denise

Good posts and questions

Hey Denise - not sure why these questions did not draw any responses. Within the past several months there have been a couple of threads on using furlers to reef the headsail. Perhaps we are seeing some furler fatigue as far as this discussion topic goes? Did you settle on a 130? I ended last season trying a 150 from a different boat and it wasn't received favorably by the crew. The H23 archives indicate success with 130's, but not much more. I decided to stay with my stock UK 110 and have it repaired and renewed by Sail Care. Anyway, since I hank on my headsails, I can't give you specific help but did want to mention the recent discussions and also say that your posts have received good responses from other H23 owners and as topics of general interest - keep 'em coming!

hey Mike

Yes i think it's the winter doldrums even the car forums i'm on are slow. I think my new genoa will be a 140. not to concerned as it can be reefed so easily with a roller. bacon Sails in Annapolis is like a sailboat flea market! well sort of. I could of spent allot of money there too! Great prices on used stuff!

Reef Away

I don't know how the 140 will work fully deployed but I can say a 110 works well with the CDI. I get good performance reefed up to 50%. After that there isn't that much drive from the headsail. I'd be interested to know where your cutoff point is when reefed.

Reef down to 70% of the LP

If you look at CDI's FAQ, you can reef down to 70% of the original LP. Any deeper than that, the headsail becomes too flat. They talk about having the sail loft put "Shape enhancing pads". I don't think the pads would hold its shape over time and would wear out rapidly. Fair Winds, Clyde http://www.sailcdi.com/ffmain.htm

yes Clyde

Read that too. But i don't plan to be doing much heavy wind sailing. And most experianced salors seem to agree that most sailing is done is light air. especially up here on the Delaware river. my next project will be get the jiffy reefing set up on my main. i think its there.. or was. thanks!
