I have a secondary genoa that I haven't used since we've owned the boat 5 plus years now, It has pencil scribbled on the top that reads "1.884 genoa" anyone have a clue on how I can figure out what % sail I have for our H34.

Thanks Bub

If it's a 1980's, the J is 13.8ft, so a 100% sail will have a foot length of 13.8, a 150% would be 20.7ft. Pull it out and measure the foot!

I may be mistaken, but I thought the % was figured with the length of the line perpendicular to the luff through the clue, not the foot (that would be too easy :) ).

I go by the overlap of the sail over the mast. A 100% working jib will reach back to the mast, and a 150% Genoa will extend back beyond the mast an additional third. It is an eyeball measurement but more than adequate for identification. Let's see for the figures given for a h34 13.8 / 2 = 6.9 and then 6.9 + 13.8 = 20.7, sounds like spot on. One learns something new everyday, I had never really paid attention that the % could be measured. I guess is the way to do it if the sail is off the boat. Just be aware that the measurements will vary for boat models and sizes but the visual proportions will always remain the same for %.

Quick & easy way to do it is: Spread the sail out on lawn and pull it flat, take hold of the tack and fold the the luff back along itself until you get a fold running perpendicular from the luff to the clew, pull everything snug and flat, measure that length (the girth measurement). Divide that by the 'J' measurement for your boat and the result will be the % of the genoa.

With the length back to the mast being 100% its so simple you can do it in your head! Chief
