The genoa roller furling drum on my 89 H335 is rubbing against the deck. The top of the drum is flush with the deck and as there is very little clearance between the deck and the drum it doesn't take much wind to move the drum sideways enough to rub against the deck. On other 335 boats of a similar vintage does the drum actually sit below the deck or is the problem I have related to rig tension?

furling drum on 33.5
Had a 92 h33.5 with same problem. If the tension on the forestay was not correct, the furling drum, which was mounted below the deck, would rub on the aft part of the deck if I remember right. I think I ended up replacing the link under the drum to get the right length, and you have to make sure the forestay tension is correct. I now have a 2000 h410 (which is another way of solving the problem). The 33.5 was a great boat.

Shackle on Drum?
The make and model of furler is not indicated and since various furlers can be installed it's difficult to give an answer to the problem. Two things I'd look at are as follows: (1) Forestay tension - as the previous poster stated, if the drum moves around horizontally it appears the forestay tension is loose. The forestay tension should not be very loose and should only have some sag when sailing downwind. A loose forestay could develop work hardning on the various parts which would eventually cause a catastrophic failure when the rig falls down. I crank up my backstay tension when leaving the boat at the dock due to wave action which travels through the marina from passing boats. (2) The other possible problem is there is most likely a shackle that holds the drum to a U-bolt near the bottom of the forestay. The U-bolt will keep the base of the drum from riding up or turning, at least this is how the Hood furlers work. Also related, the Hood furler has a clamping screw on one of the drum halves. It would be helpful to know what furler you have.

33.5 Furler

The following may help; (1) dissasemble the drum cover and rinse out the inside and bearings well, then lubricate with WD40 or other appropriate aerosol lubricant. (2) ease the jib halyard tension when furling/unfurling. My furler starts binding and rubbing about once a year; after cleaning and lubricating it usually works well.
