Asymmetrical Sail Names
Asymmetrical Spinnakers, whether designed for Cruising or Racing are probably the sails that differ the most from loft to loft. It can be confusing. The only consistent feature is that the luff is longer than the leech of the sail. Each sailmaker has a different design or philosophy regarding these sails. In order to differentiate one from another we have come up with names such as APC, Gennaker, Flasher etc. One good thing about the flexible nature of these designs is that if you have a certain size or application in mind you have a variety to choose from. When comparing these sails look at total sail area as well as optimal designed apparent wind angles. Explain to your sailmaker exactly what you want this sail to do for your boat and he or she can help you make the proper choice.Good Sailing, Bill C.
