So i had this idea yesterday, while I was helping my dad install a new generator in his 36', 10,000lb, 600 hp cruiser. Perhaps it's a bit out there? I think I want to put a nice litte 4-stroke, 1kw generator under the starboard cockpit seat (current home of my 8 gallon fuel tank) and go to a lightweight 120# thrust trolling motor instad of a real o/b. I hardly ever motor at all, but I like my electronics/radio/etc. I'm puting a second battery in soon, so i'd have 24V avaliable for the electric motor. I'd run the genset for any extended motoring, but for docking / etc jsut use battery power. The o/b doesnt charge anything, and I don't have shorepower, so right now i end up taking my batteries home every once in a while. What are some drawbacks? im sure im not thinking of something..just the noise and little bit of heat? I don't think the total weight would be much more, maybe add 20 lb or so.

Solar?

I don't motor that much either and do not have shore power. I use a Minn Kota Eundra 55# on my H23. To avoid having to lug the batteries, I recently added a 6W (400 mA) solar panel to keep the battery topped off. So now there is no gas (lake where moored is electric only) and no lugging batteries. Is solar an option?

Range

I'd like to have the ability to motor further if necessary..lake ontario is rather large! I use a small solar panel (2w) and it helps a little. But if we go for a weekend and drain the battery, the 2w charger has no chance. Nav lights at nighttime, radio, etc etc. It all adds up! curious- how fast does the 55# motor go?

re: Range

I've never drained the entire battery, so I'm not sure about the motor range. The 55# moves the H23 right along, but again not sure of the speed. I'll check next time I'm out. I only use the motor to go in and out of the mooring field, and to and from the dock.
