I have a 1983 Hunter 34 and am thinking of adding a small generator. Is there a favorite spot for one of these and is there a favorite brand for these boats ?

No to both questions

I have never heard of a permanent generator installation on this boat. I would suggest removing the aft water tank and installing a compact unit there. It hardly seems worth the $ given the value of the boat. Perhaps a Honda portable unit is a better choice if it can power the loads you have.

Hunter 34 Generator

I disagree with Clyde. I have a 1985 Hunter 34 with a 3.5 KVA generator with a kabuta (Spelling?) diesel engine. It will run the hotwater heater and the A/C unit simultaneously. It is mounted in the aft lazerette on the starboard side. Yes, it adds to to the starboard list but it is partly offset by the fuel tank added on the port side and the A/C unit under the port lazerette in the main cabin. If you were out to save money or be economical you would not have bought a boat to begin with you would charter one or two weeks a year and be done with it. Th down side is that it is noisy and I have to add some lead sound insulation. It is nice when you drop the anchor to ride out a summer squall and you fire off the generator and the A/C unit, insert the ear plugs and sip a cold beer in air conditioned comfort. I think the lead insulation will take care of the noise, I just have not got around to it yet. The prior owner did the installation and he had to cut a piece out of the starbpard aft lazerette to perform the installation and then splice it back in. He did a nice job and the only thing you see is a fine line and two rows of small stainless steel nuts. There is a telephone number on the manual that came with my boat (Next Generation Power) (904) 642-8555. You mighyt want to place your inquiry under Hunter 34 vrs general interest as a lot of owners only read the posts under their particular boat. Fair winds and following seas, Charlie

Seapower Generator

I installed a Seapower Generator which runs off the aux. engine (Yanmar) of the sailboat. I'm not sure they are still in business but it is a 5k generator and runs the A/C and everything while at anchor. Of course I had to add sound insulation but since I am on a lake I do not need except for summer occasions. I would less than candid to say that I would go to the expense to do this knowing what I know now. Forget the generator, get some good AGM batteries, a good inverter, and enjoy the quiet time since you only need the power to run fans, etc while at anchor.
