I'm very happy with my 336 and really don't want to move up to anything larger, however the wife is reluctant to overnight without airconditioning regardless of the temperature. Anyone heard of adding a power generator to a 336? Where?

CJ, We have a Hunter 376, 1998 in which we installed a diesel generator. I am by no means saying that it isn't done, but until you get into the mega yacht size, it is not recommended to sleep on a smaller craft while a generator is being run for AC. Lots of boaters talk about diesel not producing as high a level of CO, but it is not a welcome habit to our justification. Most nights up this way cool down adequately to sleep comfortably. I have a 3.5kw diesel generator in the starboard rear lazorette on my 376. I believe your lazorette is the same as mine. What you have to worry about is the height of the generator. In mine I just barely have enough room. It used to run loud but I re-insulated it and runs much much quiter now, however, I can't sleep in the aft birth with it running. If I close the doors to the aft birth, then I believe I can sleep in other parts of the boat but I haven't tried it yet (I'm not too big on AC myself). For you to be able to run it while sleeping, you need to run a wet exhaust much the same as most inboards and run it down threw the stern hull (as far back as you can get). You also need to vent the compartment to cool the generator (not the engine part but the alternator part) and run that vent out the stern upper wall. Then you will need to insulate very well...1" think all over the inside of the lazerette (oh yeah...and it's best to insulate before you put the motor in so you get under it). THEN...GO GET A CO DETECTOR FOR MURHY'S LAW.

How often do you overnight at anchor?
Consider a detached generator as an alternative to a below deck installed unit. We run a Honda 2000eu on an H320 to run the A/C at anchor. It seats on the scoop transom with the exaust vented directly into the air. For peace of mind we installed a CO alarm. The alarm went off one night about 5:00am in an anchorage where current predominated over wind. We aired the boat out and reset the CO alarm with no more inconveniences. The alarm seems to be very sensitive as no fumes could be felt and no one developed a headeche nor any other symptom. A generator additionally will charge your batteries, work your microwave and TV/DVD. Being a detached unit it can pull double duty at home during power outages because of hurricanes.
