Hunter 29.5 Pensacola
I recently bought a 1995 Hunter 29.5 that had an original diesel generator that was controlled at the electronic panel. However the generator is not on the boat anymore but the panel is still rigged for it. I'm thinking of adding a generator for offshore AC. Does anyone have any info for either a diesel generator that could attach to the existing panel or a gas which might be better priced. Opinions and suggestions please?

A 29.5 with a diesel genset is more than a little unusual. Do you actually have a genset start panel in place or just a breaker on the AC panel labeled genset?

There was a 29.5 for sale in Pensacola that I looked at once to purchase named "Shooting Star" that had this wiring harness in the port aft lazerette. On this boat the seller told me that this was an after-modification that had been done and was not original. Eventually they took out the generator to make room for gear when it became a bareboat charter boat. I looked at over ten 29.5's before buying mine and can tell you that I have not seen a generator setup in any other 29.5. So I believe that it was a custom job by a previous owner. I would say you are starting from stratch on this one. But a BIG concern I would have is where the carbon monoxide would settle...perhaps between the hull compartments and into the cabin? Be careful.

Get a Honda 2000 generator if you really really really need to have A/C

Wouldn't the CO exit the exhaust line, which most likely is routed overboard somewhere? Pretty sure diesel generators have exhaust systems, just like your engine. Could be wrong I guess.

I'd like to know where the generator was installed. Our H336 is a H29.5 that has been enlarged 20%, so any solution that worked for them should work for ours. It's been kind of tough sleeping onboard lately when on the hook, temps in the 90's and no breeze.

If you look where the previous gen set was installed, you should see a footprint of that piece of equipment, right? A plumbed in generator is much nicer than a Honda 2000, which has to be mounted on deck or in a dinghy with your shore power cord running to it. I own a Honda 2000 generator and love it, but it is not like a permanently installed unit. Assuming you have diesel fuel to your 29.5 you can also run that fuel to a diesel generator and it needs to be plumbed for water cooling, but I also assume since you had one in the boat at one time, that there is a seacock for water intake and exhaust. I would ask those who sell generators in your area for possible makes that would fit. Onan, Panda Fisher, Westerbeke are a few that come to mind right away. The panel you have, I presume has the controls to start the generator and turn it off and there also should be a switch to toggle back between the generator and shore power as you don't want them both on at the same time.

The previous owner of my 29.5 used a Honda 2000 to run the A.C. He said it fit very nicely under the helm seat.
