I am installing a diesel generator in my 410 and have a battery question. I think the standard installation is to run cables to the starter battery for the generator. I was thinking of installing a stand-alone battery for the generator. But I would then need a separate little charger for the generator battery because the generator does not have an alternator. As long as I can get the generator started I would always be able to charge the other batteries and would never have to worry about running out of battery. Any thoughts on this idea?

I just had a generator installed on my 2002 410.

They considered several locations but decided the best place was in the aft compartment near the generator. Biggest reason was the size of wire they would have had to run to put it up next to the 2 4D's under the floor in front of the engine. They glassed in a square platform for the battery and box. Looking in the stwim platform hatch where the generator goes it is near the stern almost on the centerline. It's actually under where the swim ladder goes. I think it is a great location as it's out of the way but readilly accessible. Let me know if you have other questions.

That's where I am thinking of putting a battery. How do you keep it charged?

It is my understanding that

they ran a wire from the battery charger back to the generator start battery. My battery charger had an unused third charge output socket that they used.

The 410 layout is much different. The generator goes in the aft starboard corner and the engine start batter is midships port side under the nav table seat. I'm no electrician but my installers eye's bugged out when he calculated the size of the cable he would need to run up there.

Thanks, very helpful.

I did a self install of a genset on my 410. I picked up 12vdc from the main engine starter solenoid and ran it to a battery isolation switch and then on to the generator starter. The isolation switch is for safety should the gen starter solenoid hang and there is a need to isolate it. I used No. 4 marine cable which I sized for the length of run and current draw. Works perfectly. So, the main engine start battery also starts my generator, which of course, powers the battery charger when the gen breaker is closed.
