I am in the process of purchasing a 1986 O'Day 31 and would like to pose some questions. How many were made? Is the hull and cabin top solid or cored? Is there much concern for water penetration damage? Has anyone removed and replaced the carpet like hull liner? Mine is very mildewed and smelly. Thanks, Paul Case

Oday Deck and core

I recently purchased a 1982 Oday 30. The deck on the boat had some core damage around the mast penatration. There was also high moisture readings around the left chain plate and both genoa tracks. I'm having the deck repaired as we speak, the chain plates and the genoa tracks re-bedded. I don't know if you 1986 31ft is the same construction but I would bet that it is. The gentleman who surveyed my boat told me of another Oday 30 he looked at that had water dripping thru the chain plate bolts. I'm not an expert, but I think most decks are cored. From what I've learnedmost are solid glass at the edge where the stantions are bolted thru and it meets the hull. If there is no delamination you may be able to dry out the deck and re-bed all Hardware. Be sure to check around the mast pass thru. Rich

re;cored decks and water intrusion!

I have a "79" vintage 30. I understand that the 31 was the same hull as the 30 except for the extension of the transom for a swim platform. the cabin roof and decks were balsa cored.the coreing on the decks started about 2" inboard of the rail.the stansions are thru bolted in solid glass with backing plates and are a pain the wasuuuu to rebed. if they leak there's no chance they can damage any coring. the gennie tracks are thru bolted, but you have to be carefull when rebolting that you have large fender type washers below so as not to crush the cored deck. there were a few places where they fastened hardware to decks and coach roof with screws into the upper part of decks. these should be rebedded and thru bolted so they don't loosen again and leak. the chain plates must be watched closely. there is a slot cut thru the deck which is a common place for water pena. into the deck core. when rebedding don't fasten cover tightly right away. leave it about 1/8" high, then after about 24hrs when bedding compound has cured, tighten the rest of the way. another place water intrusion is commom is the hatch behind the mast,it likes to leak under the mounting collar. the mast collar is another place. one last place and i'm not sure about this one is the side port lites. on later models they went to the one piece plexi and i don't know how prone they were to leaking. the sides of the coach roof are hollow and any water pene. above and it will work its way down into the decks. oh yes the grab rails maybe another place for water to get in. capn jim "Que Pasa?"

bought O'Day 31 #468

Well we bought Tantallon today. Needs some TLC but we believe we got her for a good price. She is #468 1986 model so I know they made at least that many before. I keep saying we because we are three partners on the boat. Hope to hear from other 31 owners. Paul

number made

Paul, I have number 438 which was made in 1985. According to a write up in "Practical Boat Buying" O'Day discontinued the 30 and started the 31 in 1984. The article says that since the models are esentially the same, O'Day continued with the same numbering series. It says they made "over 350 O'Day 30's ....(and) about 150 "streched" O'Day 31's".. which ..."stayed in production until 1986". I've had the boat about a year now and am continuing to try to build up my files for maintenance information and the like. I have the original owners manual for the boat and the M18 engine and also the M18 service and parts manuals. I'm not as experienced as some on this board but would be happy to help out with any information I can provide.
