John - Haven't seen a review per se but there are a few websites by owners out there. Do a search at www.google.com on o'day 28 and you'll get hits. O28 review
I bought a '79 O28 at the beginning of this season, with the input of my SO, after having sailed my O22 for three years. I have found it to be stable, a comfortable boat to at least weekend on, and I have recently started to understand the plumbing systems. It has the saildrive option, which is more than adequate tp propel the boat smartly. So far, I have had to beef up the starboard decking with aluminum plate due to rot and will undertake a complete fix in the fall. I've had to replace the compass and the speed/depthsounder instruments. I was late starting but have been able to get out on the water eight times since the first of July. I solo quite a bit and I was aprehensive about making three '2-foot-itis' jumps all at once, but she came with a tiller autopilot-what a Godsend. As I gain competence, especially docking in a slip after spending all my previous time at a mooring, I am liking her more and more. So far I have only sailed with the main and working jib, both original, and survived 20mph winds and a current that gave over-the-bottom speed by GPS of over 8 mph. The knotmeter transducer is another fall project, as well as cleaning up the bottom. She also takes ferry boat wakes MUCH better than the 22. There are also reviews of the O28 on this website. John- Some answers to your questions. I believe O'Days were built by Pearson Yachts in RI. Many in NE consider an O'Day to have the same "quality" characteristics as the Pearsons, but at a lower price. I bought a 28 this spring and sail her in the bays and ocean around Boston. Some reflections on about 2 months of sailing her. For a mid priced production boat, she handles very nicely. She will hold her own in a seaway. My boat has a 100% jib and main. She will beat nicely and stay reasonably flat in the water. We have sailed past many boats of similar size. I would like for the inboard diesel to have more HP. It's an 11 HP Universal and is adequate, but not much more than that. She has a 10', 3" beam and approximately 6' of headroom. Very nice and roomy inside. Head is forward on port side, aft of forward compartment. My boat has berths on each side in main cabin. Boat has 4 opening ports and one hatch in forward compartment. Galley is adequate and located in the rear of main cabin. Quarter berth under starboard cockpit seat. My boat has roller furling and I would advise to get one with that option. Cockpit is roomy and can accomodate 6 easily, particularily if you have wheel steering. She has a reverse transmom and, I think, very pleasing lines. I ran the main and reef lines back to the cockpit to remove the need to go to the mast. I'm close to 60 and prefer to stay off the cabin roof if possible. O'Days (at least in NE) tend to be less extensive than Pearsons, CDs, on a par with Catalina and more than Hunters. You should be able to find a 28 and settle on a price of less than $20K, how much less depends on the overall age and condition of the boat. Hope this is helpful and you are successful. Mike
