Just being spending time with a local fiberglass vendor and have borrowed literature and vidoes on gelcoat repair. Will then be doing some of my own small repairs. In the light of this "of season" experience, ISLAND GIRL plans to write up a full description of gelcoat repair, pictures/diagrams and sources of material. We are also looking into selling our own repair kits: A. for white/cream etc. B for brown/beige etd c: for bright colors etc If this idea is feasible, the kits would have to be shipped by ground transortation (flammable) from warehousing on the mainland. Would there be much customer interest? Would there be interest in wirte up on blister repair? Happy New Year Jim W

Yes

Jim, I would be interested in the write up. I would also like to see an product description. It sounds great. Good luck on your cockpit and cabin cracks. The bolt that has the rust stain I would check to see if the bolt is through a cored laminate. If it is I would hollow out and epoxy ( polyester) fill and redrill at that through bolt location. I the core is flexing and letting water in, it could be soaking the core. Also check to make sure that the cracks were not due to a soft spot in the laminations. r.w.landau

Sounds good for us Newbies

The write-ups would be great for us Newbies. I just got a bottom job done and I guess I was lucky, no blisters. We painted the topsides while it was out (going back in tomorrow), but I still have a lot of work on the deck and cabin. It has screw holes, worn places through the gel coat, crazing, and misc other problems, including several pencil sized holes on the edge just above the rub-rail. So I would be interested in your information. Thanks, Jim Cook "Dream Chaser"

Yes. I'll be interested in any useful information on small gelcoat and/or fiberglass repairs.

Me Too

I, too, would like to see some info on gel coat repairs. I am currently using Island Girl products on my 20 year old Catalina 30 and am sure that the gel coat products would live up to Island Girl standards. Good stuff!

I'd love a "beginners" kit for Gel Coat repair

Sign me up. I volunteer to review the "beta" trial and give feedback. I have a newer boat that has a few "spider web" cracks and gel coat "nicks". I would love a repair kit w/Video instructions and *complete* materials for small repairs.

Good Luck and get ready for the complaints...

Having played with gelcoat this past summer my experience has been that getting a color match is next to impossible; in fact I'd go all the way to impossible. Touching up small areas with the same gallon of "stirred" product on a different days left different results. But then again it beats looking at cracks; just don't expect PERFECT.

Ready!

I am a blank page. I know nothing about f/g repair. My usual method is to just jump in but my usual projects are not as crucial as the gel coat on my boat. I would love to have a very basic guide to follow to help me repair the stress cracks (?)where the cabin joins the deck this spring and to advise me in the deck paint. Bring it on!

need gel coat advice

my boat is almost 30 years old and has gathered some scrapes along the way. im also concerned about the amount of paint that comes off just by rubbing my hand on it. i bought it last year and im pretty shure she hasnt had even so much as wax in over ten tears.

Mr. Devine.

Get yourself a copy of the West Systems booklets regarding fiberglass and gelcoat repair(www.westsystem.com). Also see several articles on Sailnet(www.sailnet.com). Read all of Don Casey's articles. Like me you might be ready for a "paint job". I have already started mine.
