I have to do some repairs to the gelcoat in my 2002 Catalina. Can anyone suggest a source of supply for the gelcoat or its specifications? I know that to have the gelcoat shipped to Canada from the U.S.A. is a hassle because it is considered a dangerous good. I am hoping that someone else can provide an alternative. Regards, Chris

Gelcoat Repair

Chris, I needed to do a small repair inside the cockpit about a year ago. I did the initial fill with Marine-Tex white. I'd planned on doing gel-coat over the Marine-Tex but it turned out that the color match was just about dead-on. After cure did standard wet-sanding, then rubbing compound followed by wax. Now, granted, this was a very small spot (less than 1/2") and is in the cockpit so it may not work for a large area that is easily seen. But thought I'd pass this along in case it might work for you. Happy Sailing, Gary

Minicraft can supply

I would call Catalina. They will have gelcoat that matches perfectly. They ship to Canada everyday. Dan

Exact Match

Please note that the gelcoat for a Cat 310 manufactured in California is slightly different than the gelcoat of one manufactured in Florida. If you are in Ontario try Mike's Marine Service (905) 831 4375

Marine Tex Repairs

Well, it depends on how extensive the damage is. The small repair that I did in the cockpit was a bit smaller than the size of the fingernail on your small finger and about 1/4-inch deep; and it was on the side edge near the access hatch-starboard side. Marine Tex is fairly easy to work with, just mix per instructions (a few drops of hardener to a small amount of putty), mix up using a putty knife or stick, then fill in the hole. Over-fill the hole and after cure you'll wet-sand it down (with wet sandpaper and a wood block backing) to match surrounding area--it sands fairly easy. If the color match is good (in my case it was), then polish with rubbing compound, then wax. If it's not a good match, then you can touch up with gel-coat over the Marine Tex. If in doubt, mix up a small amount and try it on a piece of wood with a hole in it (2x4 with 3/4" hole) to get some experience with it. It's not that expensive and it's not that hard to work with and it's been around for years. Otherwise, locate a local fiberglass repair guy and have him do the job. In my harbor there are several that do great work to where you can't tell where the damage was. It just all depends on how much damage was done. Hope this helps and good luck (and hope your friendship didn't get lost with this hit!-good friends are hard to come by, even if they do make mistakes!), Gary
