I am considering buying an oday 28 that has considerable blistering under the waterline. Has anyone heard of STRUCTURAL damage on an oday from blistering. this can happen due to water intrusion and weakening of the layup. The boat will never see very rough water as it is on a small inland lake so i dont think i am worried. should I be??

blisters....

I usually do not hear of blistering problems on O'Day's. That being said, if the blisters are small pin hole types, sand them down and apply a barrier coat before repainting. If the blisters are bigger than nickles, I would have a pro take a look. Using a moisture meter he will be able to tell if the fiberglass has damage due to water intrusion.

Blisters

I have an Oday 40 and one of the few that I have heard blistering stories about. I had many small one when I bought the boat. it had already been cover with Interprotect 2000. I felt that they might be between the Interprotect and the Gel due to improper application. I had the boat sandblasted last fall, and the blisters were in the gel coat. I had a surveyor look at it and he said I could sand them all out and fill them and they would return in 3-5 years. he said the only way to eliminate them is to remove the Gel coat and build it back up. I had a company come in and strip the gel coat and spend three weeks this spring with epoxy and Interprotect and about 8 hour of sanding to smooth things out. The bottom came out pretty good. The blisters had not reached the laminate and were confined to the Gel Coat. The problem is as I inderstand from a little investigation. Blisters are formed by an acid in reaction between the resins and the water and can eventually get into the laminate causing a problem. Both West System and Interlux are helful in discussing the probelm and providing solutions. Good luck! Skip
