I am looking at a 1987 Catalina 22. I was told that Catalina had problems with Gel coat somewhere in the 80's. Does anyone know what years or models? Thanks

What does that mean?

What kind of problems? A lot of older boats have crazing in their gelcoat but that isn't structural. I've never heard of any *major* problems with gelcoat. LaDonna

Blisters?

Many, many Catalinas have had blistering problems. The gelcoat below the waterline blisters up due to osmosis. This was caused by incorrect resin-to-glass ratios. The bottom gelcoat must be peeled, and replaced with a modern coating. There may not be any blisters at all on the boat you are looking at. My C30 had none at all, and my present boat, a C36 was covered with them. Cost $5000.00 to have them fixed. In any case, don't even think of buying a boat without a survey. It costs a bit, but can help you make an informed decision when buying a boat. My survey showed the blisters, and I was able to negotiate blister repair into the sales agreement. The sellers paid $4000.00, and I paid $1000.00. This increased the value of my boat considerably, and I ended up with a great deal. Your insurance carrier may also require a survey, so having it done is win/win.
