Hi,
I am wondering if any members out there have had experience with
severe gel coat crazing. I am looking at an otherwise very nice older
1969 Vega for sale locally and the only thing that scares me is the
crazing. It is very obvious on the deck, which has never been painted,
but I can even see it under the coats of bottom paint and the topside
paint. I'm sure a professional fiberglass repair facility could
restore this, but that would be beyond my means. Any help or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will try to post photos.
Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,
The newest issue (Jan/Feb 2007) of Good Old Boat magazine has an
article on what a fellow had to go through to repair crazed gelcoat,
which turned out to be a symptom of a more severe problem.

I don't loke to scare anyone off a good boat, but an expert opinion
from someone who repairs boats for a living might be your best shot!

Dave, in my experience, deck crazing is fairly common on many GRP boats
especially where coaming meets cabin. Of course, excessive deck crazing
may be a sign of a structural defect. Hull crazing is not normal and
means the hull has been stressed. You can usually tell if it is the
result of an impact or some other stressor by the pattern of the
crazing. My cousin found crazed gel coat below the water line. It
turned out to be caused by a number of factors including improper wieght
distribution during storage (particularly important for fin keels),
oilcanning, and a failure of the bulkheads etc, under the mast. Major
headaches to repair. He should have bought a Vega! On the other hand,
I have had several boats with fairly substantial impact crazing patterns
that were visible even from the interior, that never proved to be a
problem. Trev V2915 (Mystic Rose).
