I just bought a 1993 Beneteau 400 that was made in France. It has 2 gel cell batteries that the surveyor said was bad. Also said the charger was not working. The batteries are 19 1/2 x 8 1/2 x 8 1/2. They lay on their side and I can see not information on what size they are. The side facing up is bulged slighty. The ones I have seen at West are no where near the size of these. How can I verify the they are bad, and same for the charger. I am waiting on owners manual from Beneteau, so not very familar with operation of the equipment.

Kerry, if the batteries

are slightly bulged I would venture to say that they are bad and would replace them. To test them you can always put a meter across them and check the voltage. My next question would be how old are the batteries? The diminsions you gave lead me to believe that they are 4D batteries. Is it possible that the charger overcharged the batties and that was the problem the surveyor was talking about? Good luck Charlie

Batteries and Charger!

Kerry, They appear to be 4Ds. I would always suggest that you start out with new batteries. The charger can easily be checked with a multimeter. Chargers don't often die, once you have a shore power hookup and new batteries, it should be easy to check. If you switch battery type, don't forget to adjust charge voltage at the charger and the alternator. With no batteries and a questionable charger, have thoroughly checked the engine? All this should have been done during a proper survey. Jon

Batteries

The engine was checked, it has seperate battery which is supposed to be new. Any suggestions on where to purchase the batteries? They do seem to be pricey, and looks like I will need to have someone pull the old and install the new. Seem to be quite heavy!

Look locally

Kerry, I would look locally for the batteries just becasue the price of shipping them would be very expensive. While they are heavy you can get some help and install them yourself. Good luck Charlie

Batteries!

Kerry, FWIW - I have never been able understand the logic and economics of gel batteries. With good charging management and regular maintenance, quality wet cell batteries will provide years of service at a fraction of the price. If you are heading for Tahiti next month, then maybe!

Batteries

Kerry, 2 places come to mind, both which are reputable companies locally. 1. American Battery in Fort Lauderdale, and 2. Lauderdale Battery & Altenator also in Fort Lauderdale. Jack from American battery will come to you and test your systems free of charge and give you recommendations. He eill load test your existing cells to determine their future. RL
