When I am under sail with a nice breeze and the engine is running. Motor sailing I am not getting forward thrust. Say I am motoring and approaching the harbor mouth. I hoist the main and genoa and take the wind fine on the bow and pick up speed from sailing with the motor. Suddenly I realize that I do not have any forward thrust from the prop. If I wear around and then shift into reverse and gun it and then shift back into forward after going to idle. I get forward thrust again. This never happens under motor power alone. It has something to do with the component of motor sailing. I am suspecting linkage adjustment, shift arm adjustment on the gearbox, wear on the drive cones in the box. Anyone have anything like this happen to them ? I have a 27' 1983 Hunter with the old reliable 1GM. She sank in Hurricane Katrina. I flushed the engine and gearbox out with marvel mystery oil, then diesel. I put a new prop on it, with new shaft and keys and so forth. Engine runs great, hard to start as always. But this new twist with the shifting and the motor sailing is bugging me. I need this to be 100% reliable. I appreciate any help. keithsails@gmail.com george.k.fawcett@uscg.mil

it's 27 year old it may be time for a rebuild...

but, first try these things... do you have motor oil in the gear box? Remove the shift linkage and shift it by hand. Have you overfilled the gear box? Is the shaft turning when you put it in gear? Does this make a difference? Good luck.
