We have a 1987 Hunter 37. Last labor day (2001) we lost our gear shift capabilities and had to use a manual shift to get back to the harbor. When we dismantled the binacle we discovered that the crown had broke just where the cable and lever connect. The mechanic who effected the repair recommended to reverse the crown and had to bend the shifting cable to make it work. Same thing happened on Monday (July 2002)to our intense frustration! Especially since we now could not do a manual shift without detaching the cable. Anyway, I was trying to find a replacement crown with the gear shift opposite the fuel. Merriman Yacht Specialties was the manufacturer, but are now long out of business. Edson has a replacement that will fit - BUT, the fuel is on the side, and the gear shift on the front. I think this will require another rig on the cable (or replacement cable if that's the problem) and it concerns me. Any advice on the problem, or ideas on where I might find a replacement crown whould be appreciated. Thanks! Karen S/V Regenero

Same problem

I had the same problem 5 weeks ago on my 1986 Hunter 34. I searched long and hard. You will not find a replacement made by Yacht Specalities. I went to a dealer of used parts and got lucky. I found a used replacement part that matched up with the mounting holes perfectly and had the gear shift and gas lever in the right places. It only required some minor adjustments because of larger more heavy duity levers. This used part was from Edson. I don't know what year it was, but it was probably 10 plus years old. The old part appeared to be pot metal which is not very strong. The Edson part is solid steel and very heavy. It will last a life time. I suggest you search your area for used parts and take the old part with you when you go. Don't try to purchase over the phone. I have learned that this is a very common problem on old Hunters.
