While under sail, engine turned off, should the gearleaver be in neutral or as advised by some manufacturers in reverse ?

Gear Lever

Yanmar recommends Neutral. Most of my sailor friends use neutral. I would suggest you contact engine manufacturer and google your question.

I heard reverse

Manni, the first question is whether you have a folding prop or not. if you have folding prop I hear many put it in reverse to fold it then back in neutral. I have a regular prop with Yanmar engine and Kanzaki transmission, most replies I received said to put in reverse for a few reasons: - better performance when prop is still vs rotating (atleast some think so) - transmission heats up when rotating and oil not being pumped I always put mine in reverse but ALWAYS come to a complete stop before shifting either way. when motoring the shifting isnt that much of a problem, like in a quick stop just putting it in reverse but when sailing its very hard to shift into neutral from reverse...

reverse!

Reverse is the only way to go....don't worry about what the manual says. Reverse equals less drag, less wear on your dive train, less noise and less vibration. The complete solution is a Kiwi feathering prop....also in reverse!!! These are the facts. It's a physics problem/solution that's already proven....reverse! George P

Reverse

This seems to come up annually. I was taught to shift into reverse to stop the prop from freewheeling. This reduces drag, and keeps the transmission from overheating. The drag issue being the biggest reason. I have a Yanmar diesel, but don't recall seeing anything in the manual about whether or not to leave it in gear. The downside if leaving the transmission in reverse is that it can be difficult to shift it back into neutral when its time to restart the engine. I haven't heard of any foolproof solution for this...

Complete stop when I reverse

Doug, I come to a complete stop when I change either way. I never had a problem going either way when stopped... if moving just slightly ahead I get resistance going to neutral and forcefully changing cant be good so I never do. As far as repetivive posting, I like it, gives me a chance to refresh on questions I had and for someone it's important enough they took the time to write it and ask. I do hope it doesnt turn into a prop debate though, there actually are enough of those :)
