Gate valve replacements with seacocks

My offer was accepted on a 1984 H27, and for $4,000, I figured I couldn't pass it up! Of course, we still have the H25... my sailmaker said "You bought another boat without selling your first one yet? Sucker!" Anyway, a couple of questions... 1. The fresh water inlet (for the head) gate valve stem is broken. Has anyone ever replaced these with seacocks while the boat is in the water? I have a plan to remove the old valve and plug the inlet with a bung, but I don't know how much water pressure to expect coming through the thru-hull. I'd like to replace all the gate valves with seacocks while I'm at it. 2. This year model was fitted with a Westerbeke W10-Two. It runs well, but the temperature stays at around 180 degrees, both at idle and under load. I drove the boat around for about 45 minutes yesterday, ran it at between 1500 RPM and 2800 RPM, and no change in the temperature. Is this too hot? I replaced the impeller (the old one looked fine), and it didn't make a difference. Thanks!

Go for it

Good idea to replace the gate valves. Check the path from the head to the bilge pump to ensure the water goes where you expect and then go for it. It's always disconcerting seeing water enter the boat but it reaaly looks worse than it is. The incoming water pressure is easily overcome by the proper sized wooden plug and a hammer. If the thread size or taper of the new valve is different, you could leave the bung in temporarily without any problem until a repacement is found. The Westerbeke experts here should comment on the temp but 180 sounds normal to my non-W ears. What temp thermostat is on the engine? Don

Seacock or ball valve?

It is unlikely that a seacock can be installed without changing the thru-hull. If like most Cherubinis the thru-hull has a flange inside that would prevent a seacock from screwing down flat against the hull. Another issue that I expect is that the gate valve is 1/2" and I think you will have a problem finding a seacock smaller than 3/4". Let us know. Before I installed seacocks(with new 3/4" thru-hulls) I used ball valves. And I got rid of the elbows that the gate valves were connected to. True, the ball valves have tapered threads and the thru-hull is straight. But I used teflon tape and never had a problem. I used the nipple and elbow on the outlet end of the valve to get the right angle that was needed. Head, engine, and galley drain.

10TWO Water Temp

The manual for the 10TWO that I have says not to exceed 190. Mine runs consistently at 180. I would be real nervous about trying to replace any below the waterline fittings in the water. When I replace the speed transducer with the plug, it comes in pretty fast. Chuck S/V Following Sea

crutch tip

iused a rubber crutch tip, thats what i had to plug the hole for the outside, make sure you have the right valve before you start and that a rail way or ability to ground the boat is available before you try it. If the threads break for your in trouble so you got to have some options. the wooden plug is the best idea if you have a problem hit it an extra time and it will swell up and keep you floating.

I replaced mine this past spring.....

I replaced my original valve this past spring. It was the type more like a spigut valve. I replaced it with a gate valve. I was worried about the amount of water flooding the boat also but when I actually did it I only got about 1 to 2 gallons in the boat. the pressure is not bad at all. You can stopp it with your finger. Best suggestion is be ready to put the new on before removing the old one. Good luck. Marcus

ball valves

I would use all ball valves, you will have no problem finding all original sizes at your local Boat U.S. , I also recommend changing all the gate gate valves, when I bought my 82 all the gates well frozen open, and you will not get insurance with gate valves (and peace of mind) You will have to haul out, I had to grind with a cutting wheel all the gates out, took about two days of hard work.
