Gate valve replacement

I want to replace my existing gate valves on my H27. I know Seacocks are best, but a lot of extra work over in line ball valves. Anyone have experience or thoughts on this subject. Are the original through hulls brass or pvc. Does the new valve and through hull have to match in material?

Replacement valves

I replaced all my trough hull valves many years back. The through hulls are all brass originals. I used Maralon (sp?)ball valves directly on the brass through hulls without problems. All the new valves have worked very well for over ten years. Be sure to change any PVC trough hulls that you may have above the water line. They disintegrate after about 6-7 years and then leak into the hull. I had them on the forward sink drain and the deck drains. Also in the anchor locker. Get rid of them immediately. Fair winds.

They should match

The new thru-hull and valve should match in material in order to keep the strength equal. I once tried to replace a Marelon valve in the head sink with a bronze one and the threads did not match. I stripped the thru-hull threads and had to have the thru-hull replaced also. I ended up staying with Marelon for both parts. Having to buy both parts, the labor to have it installed and the quick-haul turned into a pricy proposition.

Thru hulls

Replace them all...soon. Marlon is the better way to go, no corrosion issues ever again. Remember to use teflon tape on all connections.

Bronze, not brass.

I could be wrong(am a lot!) but I never heard of a Cherubini with brass thru-hulls. Mine were bronze(H37C) and still are. I originally installed inline bronze ball-valves directly on the thru-hulls. These are not a good match, straight threads on the thru-hull and tapered(NPT) on the valves. But I could get five or six threads(more than with the elbow and then gate valve) with no leaks. You can install the elbow and then the valve or the valve and then the elbow. With the elbow on the thru-hull you create a lever, you could step on the valve and break the thru-hull. And that was the original installation albeit with a gate valve. These are 1/2 inch thru-hulls. To install a seacock you have to replace with at least 3/4 inch thru-hulls. So far I have done that with the engine cooling intake.
