What is the best suited diesel engine and shaft combination to swap into a 1977 Ericson sloop with the fewest modifications required? The boat has 7000 lbs displacement. I'm looking into a Yanmar 3YM30 currently.
When changing a boat from gasoline to diesel power nearly everything has to be rebuilt (fuel tank, lines, engine mounts, controls etc). That said, quite a few Tartan 27 sailboats have been re-fitted with a 12 HP Faryman diesel engine. I think it is because the Faryman has a similar footprint to the Atomic 4 that was 'factory' installed so you can re-use the old engine compartment without modifications.Good luck.
direct bolt on replacements, notably the Universal Marine Diesel. The Yanmar is an excellent and popular choise but you can save a considerable amount with some of the less popular ones. Kubota comes to mind.
got lost in cyberspace. I repowered Bietzpadlin during the rebuild. The stringers were rotted and the propeller shaft was badly scored. I relocated the fuel tank to the center line of the hull. New installations were for fuel lines, engine controls(shifter and throttle), control panel , Racor fuel filter, and exhaust system. Battery cables are new. new propeller shaft and PSS shaft seal. If you are skilled you can do the work and save 40-50 hours of hired labor.
