Gasoline storage

HELP!!! Where can/do you store gasoline for your outboard on your boat? I have a 426 DS and need to keep a couple of gallons of petrol on board for the dink. I got the Idea to keep it in the cockpit aft locker as it is water tight and seemed isolated from the rest of the boat - so while I expected to get so odor in that locker I figured with the can tight and no source of flame - what the heck!!!! Now I am not so sure came back to my boat at a dock in Newport and had a gas odor in the boat - assumed it was from all the power boats around us - but checked the aft cockpit locker it had a strong odor of gas and it looked like the cap could have been tighter - however, I think that while the locker is water tight it might not be vapor tight around the inside top. So, I took the can out to on the open cockpit ventilated the locker, the boat, manually fanned the bilge areas and feel the boat is gas free. Now, the question comes: certainly many of you keep gas on the boat - where? I am wondering about the anchor locker as it has a low point drain - but I really don't like that idea. So, help me out here - what do you do? Thanks Ed

In the dink

Ed, I am assuming that on a 426 the motor is for the dink. I have a 3-4 gallon tank that feeds via a hose to the Evinrude. I keep the gas in the dink when the dink is down. When the dink is fastened to the aft of the boat,I keep it under the pilot seat. At times, we have kept it on the aft lazarette, tied to the stern pulpit. I think it best to keep it in open air. Sometimes the presure can build due to hot sun, so I keep it upright and relieve the pressure or leave the cap just a little less than fully snug. Mike D

Outboard gas Storage

How about keeping it in the propane tank locker. Its vented to the outside and no fumes can enter the boat itself.

Another option?

No way can I suggest a gas storage place on a boat that big! Outside would be my choice. But it made me wonder about a diesel for the dink. Has anyone seen anything smaller and lighter than the Yanmars(Related Link)? P.S. I added the Link but it did not show. Here it is for cut and paste: http://www.comcen.com.au/~minards/ymde_out.html
