I want to adjust the valves and torque the head on my Universal M-18 and was thinking I should have a new rocker arm cover gasket on hand before I do this but am having a bit of a hard time finding one. Will I definitely need a new gasket or can I get away with the old one.

Thanks

www.marinedieseldirect.com will have it, but at marine prices. You have a Kabota tractor engine. If you know the engine model for a tractor, go to a tractor dealer. If you don't know the engine model equivalent, use Google and find out. Good luck.

That's a Kubota Z600 engine used in the B4200 tractor. Your local Kubota dealer or online tractor parts site will have parts for about 1/4 the marine prices. Same exact parts. They need the tractor number to search.
I usually cut out my own gaskets from material bought at the auto parts store. A bit of work but very inexpensive.

It's a rubber seal.
Mine was still good after twenty five years when I did a valve adjustment.

Thanks for the replies. I should have said I was having a hard time finding one locally. My regular suppliers don't have one and I didn't want to wait the time for shipping or pay the expense. I know it is a Kubota Z600 engine but we don't have a local tractor dealer here in Los Angeles (at least that I can find).

Weinie's response is encouraging so I may try to do it and reuse the old gasket. Hopefully the worst that could happen is a minor oil leak that I could live with until I got a new gasket.

Thanks again for all the responses.

If its rubber you'll probably be OK. Old cork or paper gaskets are hard to remove without tearing them.
