My recently purchased M25 has the gas tank for the outboard in the cockpit. I would prefer some other location. Please let me know your suggestions.

Gas Tank

Well I think you are stuck there. I would hessitate storing it under the cockpit, as it is directly connected to your cabin, and who wants to smell gas all the time. I know that it takes up some room, but in the foot way of the cockpit is really the best. I am planning on building a box to cover the unsightly red can, so I would say that this is your best option. No CO2 in the sleeping areas. By the way, what is the year of your boat? I am always looking for ideas for my boat, and I am getting ready to mount a new radio in my boat. Where is yours?

New Ideas

My boat is a 1985. I like your idea about a box over the tank. I was trying to figure out a way to store, perhaps a smaller tank, out the back of the boat. Something like a stainless steel rack that would hold the tank. The rack could be on the opposite side of the outboard? My boat has none of the accessories attached so I am starting from scratch and also looking for options. I liked John S’s idea about the depth finder/GPS/VHF combo (see his link from the “forward deck layout” thread on this site). He also has pictures of other accessory layouts. How do you have your accessories set up?

Moved Mine to Cockpit

My MAC 23 gas tank was under the benches in the cockpit. All it took was one small spill and the smell lingered in the cabin for months. I made a wood bench supported by aluminum angles in the aft part of the cockpit. The tank goes under the bench and is tied down with bungees. I like the arrangement. Do not move it so that it has access to the cabin.

Archives

There are some good ideas in the archives including adding a permanent tank below the cockpit with fill and vent tubes in the transom. I've always liked the idea of an open face locker under the port cockpit seat. It would be sealed off from the inside of the boat. The outboard tank would slide in behind yor feet and a net or bungee would keep it from sliding out. vwj

Under the cockpit

I have a Mac 25 and last year I installed a gas tank directly under the cockipit. The tank is designed to be a below deck tank. It is vented a I have never had a fuel leak or gas fumes. It is great to get that silly tank out of the cockpit. I have more room in the cockpit and I always have plenty of fuel. I veted the tank through the transom. My tank is 12 gallons. Overton's has plenty of sizes to choose from. I glassed 2 X 4's to the bottom of the boat and mounted the tank with brackets that came with the tank to the 2 X 4's. One of the best mods if done.

Set up

Well I have a handheld GPS, but I do have a Depth/fish finder. I have that mounted on a board at the bottom of the main companion way. That way I can remove it while transporting the boat. My radio is just inside the companion way on the Starboard side mounted on the bulkhead. Speaker facing up, and the remote close to the opening in case I need to get to it fast. I still have a buble compass mounted on the outside of the bulkhead, and I have ordered a Power Tiller. This give you all of your controls right on the tiller. Really nice. I have a portable AM/FM stereo CD combo that runs on 6 D cell batteries, and that works great for now, but I would love to get one that is built in and is installed correctly, but for now it works to get the Giants games while in Mc Covey Cove in San Francisco Bay. I have a galley, but I have never used it, and I don't think I will, but there may be a day. As far as other equipment....... I have nothing really fancy. I am a strip down sailor that loves to be on a boat in the Bay. If you need any ideas... This place is great to bounce ideas off of. Enjoy, and happy Sailing...
