Gas tank storage and venting

Hi: Not real sure of the terms here but I just purchase a 1994 26S and notice that the enclosed storage area in the back of boat where the gas tanks have been stored is unvented. I am alittle concerned about gas fumes, electrical wire to lights, etc.. and I think it's not legal or safe. Also can smell gas in the cabin, any ideas out there on venting (1 or 2) and a good spot for vent(s) and a source for vents. I was wondering where the gas is stored on newer MacGregors. Thanks for the help

I've got passive vent system on my 26S

Check our my webpage on Bob White's website. I detailed it pretty well and I got the info from West Marine's General Catalog. The system on my boat takes all the vapors out and works like a charm. You could, I suppose, install an in-line blower in the exhaust hose if you really wanted to make it super duty. http://www.macgregor-boats.com/sailaway3.html

Gas Leak

I have a 95' 26S, and haven't had any problems with gas fumes in the lazerett or cabin. I don't have a vent in the lazerett either. Could this possibly be due to a leak in your gas tank? I would start there, and make sure it is sound with no leaks. Then check the hose and fittings that leads from the tank to your motor. There must be some sort of opening between the lazerett and the cabin if the fumes have made it in there. Although I've crawled all over and under my boat, I haven't seen an obvious opening. Check to see if there might be gas (or an old gas can) in the bilge areas. Happy sails, Bruce Cowin (Boulder, IL)

Have been stored?

I take it this is not the permanent location of the gas tank(s). Removable gas tanks will often vent. There may well be a gas smell in an unventiated area, but unless it is strong it should be no cercern. Assuming there is nothing else is in the storage that could cause the smell. Note: Boats built after 7/31/1980 with enclosed gasoline engine or gas tank spaces must have a powered ventilation system that meet USCG standards. This includes permanent electric blowers. Ron PS Never fill a removeable gas tank while in the boat. And make sure they are clean and dry before putting them back on the boat.

Laz/ gas venting

I too have a 94 26s. I guess, unlike the 95, there is an opening in the cabin to the storage area. It is where the drainage tube for the cockpit runs down. I too get bad fumes, which is a problem if I want to sleep on the boat. Now, how to vent. Though I've not done it yet, Bob seems to have the best, most cost efficient idea. From his site are links to other methods.
