I am a recent owner of a Mac 22 and after sailing for a couple years, have been looking for a better location to keep my external fuel tank. I don't like it sitting on the floor in the cockpit, any ideas? I was condidering making something that would hang over the stern, or somehow keeping it belot the seat in the stern? Thanks

Me too

I also am a new owner and wondering the same thing. I was also thinking of putting it under the seat behind the hatch. There is some styrofoam (for flotation) but I think it would fit, then have an opening in the seat for the gas hose, but am unsure if that will work.

Mine stays in cockpit

We used to keep it below under the seat hatch, until we realized the sloshing action forced gas fumes out the vent, and they stay in the cabin and bilge since they are heavier than air. If you sleep on board (or cook) its not good. I also had the problem of aging gas mixed with oil. The six gallon tank fits perfectly if jambed between the seats, but was more gas than I usually used. Now I use a small 3 gallon tank and a small plastic jerrycan beside it at the rear of the cockpit floor. If I need the extra gas, its not hard to add it, even underway; if I don't need it, I pour the unmixed gas into my car. Usually you don't sit that far back because of the sheets, but even when I do, my feet don't seem to need to be where the tanks are. Short of building an isolated, ventilated, accessible compartment, I don't know what else you can do. A permanent tank gets into serious alterations.

Externally Vented Tank?

Either the factory or the PO installed two hoses from the inside tank thru the transom to the outside. One provides gas to the motor; the other simply allows air into the tank. Their O.D. is about 1/2" and they are well gasketed where they exit the hull. Last year was my first year on Indigo and I did the tank in the cockpit thing, but this year I'm going back to the original configuration and see if it causes any noticeable gas fumes in the cabin.

Miricle Tank

We have a 1993 Macgregor and also did'nt want a gas tank at my feet. I'm not up on the 22mac but I bought about a three or four gallon Gravely lawn mower tank and installed it of the back of transom using 2in allum angle rivited togetter. This really worked for us. Gods Blessings, Chuck

Please!

Please keep it out of the cabin or anywhere else where fumes will build up. If you don't, you're asking for trouble. You have the potential for asphyxiation if an electrical system or static spark doesn't cause a big bang first. I don't like the external tank underfoot either. I am working on a three (or five, depending on how you look at it) sided stowage area under the port cockpit seat. It opens to the cockpit, not the cabin. I believe that Precisions & a few other makes have this set up.

Gas Tank

If you want to have an on board fuel tank, get an onboard fuel tank. Mount it well, make sure you have the right ventalation, and get the right through hull fittings. CG can ruin your day having a portable tank below decks. Blowing up can ruin your day too. I am planning on mounting a fuel tank on the port side behind the hatch too. I will make sure to have it also contained in a vapor proof compartment, vented overboard with the proper vents. This costs bucks$$. But it is a big improvement.
