Garmin GPSMAP 942 MFD Routing to Raymarine Auto Pilot? [SOLVED]

I'm curious if anyone knows the trick to get a Raymarine autopilot ACU-100/P70s to receive Garmin next waypoint messages? If I pick a spot on the chartplotter and hit "route to", then click "Track" on the auto pilot controller, it doesn't pick up the required heading.

I know the two devices are "talking" as I can see wind, speed, depth type data in both devices from across the NMEA2000 and SeaTalk networks. The attached diagram is how my boat is configured.

Any ideas?

thanks

I think you need to hit "go to", I don't use the "route to" at all because I only steer to one waypoint at a time and "route to" is a series of waypoints.

Where's the AP Control unit, I think RM calls it a Control Head? Can a Garmin chart plotter control a RM AP? I'm thinking not.

I don't see a display connected to the AP, how do you know the AP computer is getting the commands?

ACU-100 is the "brain" of the auto pilot in the diagram and is connected via SeaTalk. I can't confirm that messages from the Garmin are received which would be helpful to know. I wish there was an easy way to view the messages being sent on the network and then probe at different locations. There is some minimal diagnostic features in the AP display unit (p70) but they are very limited and not helpful with this issue.

Interesting. I'll give that a try. thanks!

The Garmin will not control the RM AP but it will send a waypoint so the AP can steer to the waypoint.

Radar, Autopilots, and sonar are typically proprietary products, you can not mix and match. If you look at the manual for the Garmin there should be a list of the NMEA2000 sentences that it can send and receive, note there will not be any AP commands.

You'll have to acquire a Raymarine Control Head to control the AP like this one or the one with push buttons.

He's not trying to control the AP from the Garmin, he just wants it to steer to a waypoint.

According to the RM literature the control head only provides these functions:

  • Supported autopilot modes: Auto; Standby; Pattern; Track; Wind Vane; Power Steer and Jog Steer

Not sure what "Pattern" or "Track" are. There doesn't appear to be an option for steering to waypoints. Perhaps the manual would be more enlightening.

It's a shame, with all the work on standards, that these systems don't work together well. My system is all B&G/Simrad, but the wind, speed, and depth are older RM, and it works well. There's a Seatalk to STNG gateway.
