I bought one of these and learning it is driving me nuts... Can anyone help me with how to create a waypoint (and name it) without physically being there? Also recall of? This product comes with marine charts loaded. Garmin's manual sucks...(as most do)...Tnx

Agree with you – the manual is very basic and useless regarding the finer points, it is only surpassed in this regard by Garmin’s Australian distributor’s service.

The gadget itself is pretty good, once you get used to it. I have a GPSmap 78s, apparently the ‘c’ only applies to the inclusion a Marine map, therefore functions should be the same.

To create a waypoint on the map, rather than entering your current location:

1. Move the pointer to the location you have selected on the map and give it a short click
2. When ‘Go’ for start of navigation appears on screen, hit Menu which then shows ’Save as Waypoint’
3. Hit ‘Enter’ . A confirmation will then show that the waypoint has been saved. Hit ‘Enter’ to confirm confirmation ‘ok’.
To find the waypoint again:

1. Select ‘Main Menu’, then ‘Waypoint Mgr’. The latter will show you the list of all ’WPs’ saved.
2. Select the ‘WP’ you want. You can then move the cursor to edit any of the fields,eg. enter a name for ‘WP’ or hit ‘Menu’
and use some other functions.

Should you accidentally hit ‘Go’ somewhere along the line and you do not wish to go to the ‘WP’ selected, but want to delete that annoying line that points you in that direction, select ‘Find’, then select ‘Stop Navigation’.

Another tip: It eats ‘AA batteries'. Choose Lithium.

Happy to help with any other problems I may have come across.

You can also create waypoints and routes from your computer and transfer them into the unit.

Mark - I agree.. You need a PHD to work those things. I have a 76CSx and have been playing with it for two weeks. I am just now getting around it with some knowledge. I have the Garmin Mobile PC in my computer and use it to find and load the POI's with http://www.poi-factory.com/. It's free.
Hang in there, Google POI's for the Garmin. I got the 2010 North American Maps off Ebay for less than $50.

I have a friend with a 72. I swore off Garmin for years 'cuz having to use the menu instead of what my old Magellan had, a simple GO TO button, used to drive me nuts.

Then I bought a 76 Cx. What a dream. I submit that if one can't use the 76 Cx easily, one might need to reread the manual and few more times, 'cuz I find it incredibly intuitive.

What I did for our OLD OLD OLD Micrologic loran (OK, ye old dawgs, ye know what I mean by OLD!!!:)) was to work up a simple "cheat sheet" of instructions, 'cuz both the manual and "quick book" instructions were written in Greek by an engineer on the far side of the moon!

Really, it's NOT that hard.

i loved my garmin untill i returned it for some repair andthey lost all my waypoints.
i like them and find it quit simple to use once you realise how important the menu button is. it opens up all the optional things on the various screens. a flow chart would help to make it visual. but i took my first one out on my bike and mapped the island i live on. really got to know it.

Thanks albanach. That got me started. Would be nice to be able to scroll the chart without having to use the cursor.....
