I'm looking for 1) suggestions (than purchase a new unit) 2) one of the data cards that Garmin used to do their updates on the GPSMAP 498, or 3) more information on "Preparing SW Update Card" that is mentioned in the manual. Further background is below.
The unit is about several versions behind the last version that Garmin issued. The last version fixes several problems that I'm having. The unit works fine except when these known problems occur. The biggest is that it doesn't track speed or direction (depth still works). I've tried restarting it, letting it sit through the satellite finding process, immediately clicking ok, having it Initialize Position (usually only needed if you move the boat more than a couple hundred miles from the last position, which I sometimes do - the 26D is a trailer sailor after all).
When I contacted Garmin support they indicated they no longer support that model and don't have any of the cards around that they used to send out with the upgrade on it. Their old process was to take a security deposit (I think it was about $50) and send you the card. You did the upgrade and then when you returned the card the deposit was refunded.
I'm hopeful with all of the technies out there that someone decided it was worth keeping the card or made a copy of it that I could borrow or knows how to do the upgrade some other way.
