I'm planning on replacing my aging Magellan NAV 6500 GPS with a Garmin 276c. Would like to know if the unit antenna can receive the gps signal under the bimini or if it requires a remote antenna. Thanks, Lee ss Calaloo

Garmin 176C GPS

The 176C is the old version of the 276C. I found one on closeout and it was about $200 less than the price of the newer design. Only difference I could see is that that the 276C has a longer battery life. That was not important to me as the unit is hardwired into my instrument panel. The standard antenna works perfect under the bimini. The display is easy to read without sunglasses on (otherwise the screen is dark). Features are all good. I found the instructions for operating the unit to be poor, but not to the point where you can't figure it out. I would recommend the unit to anyone that doesn't need a large screen GPS.

The standard antenna will work under the bimini. I used a portable GPS with the flip up antenna both under the bimini and below at the nav desk. Worked fine at both spots. Just bought a new 182C with the external antenna. As an experiment, I tried the handheld's antenna on the 182C at the nav desk, and it worked fine, but the external antenna does give better performance.

works under the Bimini just fine

I just bought a 276C, used it last weekend. We have a Bimini. It works there just fine.
