Garmin GPS antenna wire - replacing plug?

I need to cut off the coax plug that is on the end of the GPS antenna wire so I can feed it up through a pedestal. Can someone advise where I can get hold of a replacement plug - the Garmin one is weatherproof and the replacement will have to be too.

Which one?

Patrick, what Garmin unit are you talking about.

Here is what I had to do with my Magellan

It came with cable that was smaller than anything Radio Shack sells including the plug. (I'm talking about the Antenna.) Of course, it was 18" too short for the radar arch. To make a long story short, after finding a supplier on the web, I still had to cut the coax to snake it to my nav station. The cut was made and after pulling the wire into the clear, I stripped the center conductor back enough to solder, but first, I positioned shrink tubing. I made the connection, moved the tube in place and shrinked it. (that's not a word) Then the outer strands had to be connected. All I did was twist them into a wire like lead and solder them together. I then wrapped aluminum foil around that part of the joint to act as shielding. (just in case) More shrink tubing finished the joint. It works perfectly

Its a 182C color GPS/plotter

The "plotter end" of the cable terminates in a coax plug - the Antenna end dissapears up inside what looks like a sealed unit.

Fred - so you reused the existing plug?

and just soldered the wire together after snaking?

One Way or Another

Patrick, I would suggest that you cut the cable in the middle where it can be located in a protected area after the installation. When you go to reconect the cut ends you might first try carefully soldering the center conductor and shield and taping over the splice. If that does not work then install BNC type coaxial connector on each end with a barrel connector to make a splice. These connectors are avaliable at Radio Shack along with the marine outlets. I have done some the testing for the US US Navy on just this issue and depending on cable length and other factors the connector can be critical.
